WhatsApp Safety · Teen Parental Controls · Ages 13–17 · Step-by-Step + Interactive Guide · Oct 2026

Quick answer: WhatsApp announced parental controls for teen accounts on 30 September 2026. They let a parent link their own WhatsApp to their teen's account and manage who can see their profile, who can add them to groups, Status, Channels and Meta AI, protected by a parent PIN. To set them up, open Settings > Parental controls on your teen's phone, confirm their birthday, scan the QR code with your phone and create a six-digit PIN. Parents cannot read their teen's messages or listen to their calls.

When Did WhatsApp Launch Parental Controls?

WhatsApp announced optional parental controls for teen accounts on 30 September 2026. They build on parent-managed accounts for children under 13, which WhatsApp introduced in March 2026. The two features complete a set of supervision tools across Meta's apps:

  1. Meta introduces Teen Accounts on Instagram, with built-in protections for users under 18.
  2. Teen Accounts expand to Facebook and Messenger.
  3. WhatsApp launches parent-managed accounts for children under 13.
  4. Meta settles a landmark teen-safety case brought by US states, agreeing to stricter safeguards for young users.
  5. WhatsApp announces parental controls for teen accounts (ages 13–17).

Why WhatsApp Introduced Them

WhatsApp is where many teenagers do most of their messaging, and it has grown well beyond one-to-one chats. Groups can have hundreds of members, Channels broadcast content from public accounts, Status shares updates widely and Meta AI is built into the app. Each of these can expose a teen to strangers or unsuitable content.

Pressure has also been building on Meta. In August 2026 the company settled a case brought by US states over the safety of young users on its platforms. The guaranteed payments are reported at about $12.7 billion, with the total potentially rising to around $18 billion. As part of the settlement, Meta agreed to stricter safeguards for teens. Regulators and lawmakers worldwide have pushed platforms to give parents more control.

WhatsApp's challenge was to add supervision without breaking its core promise of privacy. Its answer is controls over settings and activity, not content. Personal messages and calls stay end-to-end encrypted, so no one outside the chat, including parents and WhatsApp itself, can read or hear them.

Your teen can still make their own settings stricter at any time. Only relaxing a protected setting needs your PIN.

What You Need Before You Start

  • Your teen's phone and your phone, side by side.
  • The latest version of WhatsApp on both phones.
  • Your own WhatsApp account. You must be 18 or older.
  • Your teen, ready to take part. The controls are designed to be set up together, and both of you must agree to link the accounts.

Step-by-Step: Setting Up WhatsApp Parental Controls

Use the interactive walkthrough to see what each screen looks like, or follow the written steps below it.

Step through the setup. The badge shows whose phone you need for each step.

  1. Update WhatsApp on both phones (both phones): Parental controls need the latest version of WhatsApp on your phone and your teen's. Update from the App Store or Google Play first.
  2. Open Parental controls (teen's phone): On your teen's phone, open WhatsApp and go to Settings > Parental controls, then tap Continue.
  3. Confirm your teen's birthday (teen's phone): Enter and confirm your teen's date of birth. The controls are designed for teens aged 13 to 17.
  4. Show the QR code (teen's phone): Tap Continue to start linking a parent. A QR code appears on your teen's screen.
  5. Scan the code with your phone (your phone): Point your phone's camera at the QR code and open the WhatsApp link that appears.
  6. Agree and confirm you're an adult (your phone): Tap Agree and continue, then complete the check confirming you are 18 or older.
  7. Create your parent PIN (your phone): Create a six-digit PIN and confirm it. Keep it private: it is what stops settings being relaxed without you.
  8. Enter the PIN on your teen's phone (teen's phone): Go back to your teen's phone and enter the parent PIN to unlock the settings.
  9. Review the settings together (both phones): Go through privacy, groups, Status, Channels and Meta AI together and agree on each one. Use the settings planner below to prepare.
  10. Finish (teen's phone): Tap Continue, then Done. Parental controls are now on, and you can manage them from your own phone at any time.

Choosing the Right Settings

There is no single right answer. A 13-year-old who has just got a phone needs different settings from a 17-year-old who is nearly an adult. Use the planner to try out combinations before you set them up, then download a family agreement to sign together.

How Group Alerts Work

Groups are where teens are most likely to meet strangers. As well as alerts when your teen joins or leaves a group, WhatsApp notifies you when a group they are in reaches 30, 100 and 250 members. A sudden jump in size can be a sign that a group has been shared publicly.

Changing Settings or Turning Controls Off

  • From your phone: open WhatsApp, go to Settings > Parental controls and select your teen's account.
  • From your teen's phone: go to Settings > Parental controls and enter your parent PIN.
  • To turn them off: parents can switch the controls off completely from the same Parental controls screen.

Review the settings every few months. As your teen shows they can handle more independence, relax settings together, so the controls feel like support rather than surveillance.

Tips for Parents

  • Talk before you tap. Explain why you want the controls and what you can and can't see. Teens are far more likely to accept controls they understand.
  • Keep your PIN private. If your teen learns it, the protections stop working.
  • Treat alerts as conversation starters, not accusations. "I saw you joined a big group. What's it about?" goes further than a ban.
  • Cover scams and strangers. No setting replaces knowing never to share codes, photos or personal details with someone they haven't met.
  • Combine with device controls. Use your phone's own family tools, such as Screen Time or Google Family Link, for screen time and app downloads.

Final Thoughts

WhatsApp's parental controls strike a careful balance: parents get a say over who can reach their teen and what they are exposed to, while teens keep the privacy of their conversations. Set them up together, agree on the settings, and revisit them as your teen grows. Used that way, the controls become a tool for building trust, not just a safety net.
